Everyday Superhero: Firefighter Puppets

When you think of a superhero, do you usually think of all the costume gear they wear, or their super power? Or do you think of those people out there that are willing to sacrifice their own well being for others?

As an Experience Early Learning (EEL) Blogger, I receive the EEL Preschool Curriculum in exchange for my honest opinions and authentic stories about our experiences using the curriculum. All opinions and thoughts are completely my own.

This week we are studying the Everyday Superhero: Police Officers, Peacekeepers, Volunteers, Good Neighbors, and of course Firefighters with our Superhero Box from Experience Early Learning. Today we made firefighter lunch bag puppets and they are a blast!!

I asked my now 6 year old (her birthday was yesterday) and her 2 year old brother, “How is a firefighter like a superhero?” Instantly, my girl spouted out, “Firefighters can save the day by rescuing people and putting out fires.” I love how she said they “save the day.” We then went on a hunt for firefighters in some of our favorite books: Mercy Watson (this is a FANTASTIC deal by the way.) I’ve read these books aloud for over a year and they are some of my kids’ most favorite books, even my 2 year old!

Experience Early Learning sent us some red paper firefighter parts and paper bags to create our own fire fighting puppets! My kids loooooove making lunch bag puppets so they were eager to make these.

The lunch bags had some writing on the bottom of them where the mouth was supposed to be, so the kids used some pink scrap cardstock and a circle punch to make their mouth. We could totally draw eyes for our puppets, but when you have a bag of all sorts of googly eyes, you use your stash.

My daughter wanted hers to have hair. All I had was rainbow yarn and construction paper, but when you have RAINBOW yarn and a 6 year old girl, the answer is always Rainbow, lol. She cut the yarn, I hot glued it to her bag, and then she glued her hat and gear on the body.

Two year olds + glue = disaster. As you all know, my son loves him some glue! So today I decided to mark where I wanted him to put the glue instead of just saying it. He did great and I have to remember this tactic for the future!

My girl even added the axes to the hood that she saw in the Make and Play picture. She’s always been a stickler for making things look like the picture. These puppets turned out so cute but the best part was when they played with them and pretended to climb a ladder to rescue a cat (which is a scene in Mercy Watson: Princess in Disguise)

This video cracks me up! The speed he runs to bring the ladder and how slowly she climbs up the ladder… pretty much sums up their personality right there. Then when they high five and he smashes “Fire Department” in the face instead of using his other hand…. I couldn’t help but giggle at them this morning.

Our lunch bag firefighter puppets are now in our basket of lunch bag puppets, and I can’t wait to see and hear the new stories my kids come up with as they use their Everyday Superheroes to save the day!
